We should not be punishing them for our 1st world carbon-decadence in the last 200 years! As for computer efficiency, they are improving constantly in line with Moore's Law. Servers and personal computing devices are vastly more efficient than only a few years ago, but thanks to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jevons_paradox" rel="nofollow">Jevon's paradox</a> we are using more of that commodity. As a result the school needed installing an oil drinking generator! But at least the kids can update their Facebook every day. Maybe shoudl *all* be reducing our computer's carbon emissions to pre-Facebook levels? Total cost to the company about £18,000. It is estimated that it has saved about £100,000 in travel / accomodation costs for each year that we have had the system. An analysis of expenses shows a reduction of around 45% for all claimed mileage. It has significantly reduced the amount of flights that senior managers needed to take - 5 years ago, the CEO made 80 return flights a year, now it is down to under 20. As you can imagine, this has also made a huge difference to their efficiency and to their work / life balance, as well as reducing the carbon footprint. It has also contributed to a slightly improved attitude to collaboration between the various departments at the different business units - although I know that we could do more.
