I'm struggling to be taken seriously as a female in an IT role - my job title is "Admin Assistant" and my pay grade is on the admin scale. However, my job description says "build & maintain xxx website", "build & maintain FileMaker Pro databases" and includes knowledge of HTML/CSS and experience in database development in the "Person Spec.".

I've appealed my grading numerous times but got nowhere. I REALLY hate saying this but the truth is I do see men in my organisation titled "Support Officer" etc. doing less technical tasks than me, paid vastly more than me (one is 3 pay grades higher and only has to "input into databases") being promoted etc. etc.

By keeping me in a so called "admin" role, they get my skills at a significant discount! Needless to say I'm fed up fighting and getting nowhere, so I've recently joined a union and started applying for other jobs.

have just been discussing this with a friend of mine who project manages IT developers at the BBC. she's just wandered through the iplayer department and estimates that only about 3 out of 60 people there are women.

Interesting ways you advocate to even out the imbalance.

Might I also add that in large companies and organisations a push towards encouraging internal recruitment into the field. I've worked for Legal & General for close to 13 years and have had several roles within the company, each one leading closer to my more technical, analytical aptitudes. I've gone from basic admin clerk to Business Analyst and know many colleagues who have taken similar internal routes.

If IT departments took the tack of head-hunting from within and sponsoring training they may find savings on recruitment and employee loyalty as well as helping more women into the sector.
